Cupid is SO Overrated!

As many of you know, it's St. Valentine's Day. This lovey-dovey day of card giving must have originated from somewhere, right?

Well, Valentine's Day was actually named after Christian martyrs named "Valentine", and the idea of Valentine's Day supposedly came from the European Middle Ages when traditions of courtly love was a popular craze! This also explains the stereotypical generic story of a damsel in distress in a high tower, guarded by a dragon, and a knight in armor on a horse come to save the damsel, wrapped in the knight's arms.

... or so I've always sought it out to be.

Anyways, this "holiday" has spread throughout the world!

If you live in Brazil, your Valentine's Day would be called "Dia dos Namorados" or "Girlfriends'/Boyfriends' Day", and it would be on June 12!

In the Philippines, Valentine's Day would be called "Araw ng mga Puso", and people would usually get flowers for their Valentine's!

In Japan, girls give the guys they like chocolate, like in Shojo anime, then on White Day, the guys give gifts to the girls in return. I would love to go to Japan have a guy give me a gift! I would start laughing, because it would seem so odd in America!

Although it has no relation to St. Valentine's Day, Sepandarmazgan is a celebration of the Earth, love, and friendship in Iran! It's quite similar to Valentine's Day, being that you give gifts to people that you care about. The Association of Iran's Cultural and Natural Phenomena are trying to get Sepandarmazgan to become a national holiday for the day February 17.

... And now for my wake up call to Cupid...

In a nutshell, I think that Valentine's Day is an overrated holiday run by card and candy factories, just for some day that you get your sweetie something special than usual. I mean, shouldn't you be nice and give your sweetheart something nice, occasionally, anyway? Come on, we don't even get the day off! This one doesn't count, though, since it's the weekend, anyway.

So there you have it, everything you ever needed , or not needed, to know about Valentine's Day! (Who else saw the movie Valentine's Day? I thought it was a sweet, unpredictable chick-flick! Who else is inspired to make an "I HATE Valentine's Day Party"?) What do you think about Valentine's Day? Do you think that it's as overrated as I think it is, or do you think that it's a sweet holiday that allows you and your sweetheart to spend time together? Leave a comment below, if you please!

With peace, love, and Shaka-ness, have a nice day!

Lucky Bird Poop???

When I was in kindergarten, a bird flew over me and dropped poop on my head! That's right, a bird took a dump over my head! According to urban legends, bird poop on your head is good luck. I've felt very fortunate to have been able to live the wonderful life that I have. A loving family, awesome friends, good weather, and a great education are a few of the building blocks that make my life the amazing life that I'm grateful for! Since I don't feel like giving you my birth name, I'll give you this one to call me by : Akemi Tori. Welcome to my life (if anyone bothers to read this). With peace, love, and Shaka-ness, have a nice day!
